STUDENTS from the College of West Anglia in King’s Lynn conquered fears and an infamous ridge as they braved the elements to climb 3,560 feet (1,085m) to the top of Mount Snowdon in North Wales.

In a day which saw wind, rain and a heavy snowline at the summit, the group had to work well together to scramble their way across the Crib Goch ridge.

It means “red comb” in the Welsh language, thought to refer to its serrated edge and colour of some of the rocks.

Eight Level Three students from the college’s Uniformed Services course were joined by tutors Stuart Harrowing and Lee Mallott.

After conquering Snowdon on the first day the second day began early at 5am to begin the ascent up the popular Tryfan (915m).

Although smaller than Snowdon, students had to overcome more technical scrambles which could have been classed as rock climbing.

The group again showed exemplary determination and fitness to then complete the descent in under an hour, said their tutors.

After a “fantastic” two days all eight students completed the Bronze Level National Navigation Award Scheme.

Stuart Harrowing said: “These young people overcame some fears and gained a nationally-recognised qualification in what was a fantastic expedition.”

I know we have Christmas to get through before thinking about 2012 but for anyone who is planning an event to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee I thought I would share this information found on the Cambridgeshire County Council website

Organisers of events to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee next year are being urged to use the worldwide web to publicise details of their planned celebration.

Cambridgeshire.net, maintained by Cambridgeshire County Council, lists details of local organisations, courses, services and facilities across the county. Over 30,000 people a month visit the site and it has a top ranking with internet search engines.

Given the high number of community events which are expected to be organised to celebrate the special event over the Bank Holiday weekend of June 2-5, 2012, the website is the ideal venue to create a one-stop shop of local Jubilee activities at: www.cambridgeshire.net – and it’s free to use!

Even people who do not have direct access to the Internet, can post their details on the website by contacting Jean Twine, cambridgehsire.net System Administrator who can arrange for your event to be registered – she can be contacted on (01223) 729080.

Information on www.cambridgeshire.net will also be shared with other websites as appropriate, including

• ShapeYourPlace http://shapeyourplace.org/
• myHuntingdonshire http://my.huntingdonshire.gov.uk/
• My Cambridgeshire http://my.cambridgeshire.gov.uk/

If you are having financial difficulties or wish to borrow money quickly, it may be tempting to borrow money from illegal money lenders, known as ‘loan sharks’, who lend cash without asking questions about your financial situation. Trading Standards urge you to avoid such lenders and assure you that there are safe, reliable lenders that you can use.

Loan sharks may call at your door or you might hear about them from other people. At first they seem friendly and helpful and it might seem like a quick and easy way to borrow money. The trouble is that these people usually charge huge interest on their loan, meaning you have to pay back much more than you borrowed and far more than you can afford. With no paperwork to record what you are expected to repay, a loan of a few hundred pounds can soon lead to a demand to repay thousands of pounds – and the debt can quickly become too much to ever repay. If you struggle to keep up the repayments, loan sharks may use intimidation, threats and even violence to ensure you find the money somehow. It is believed that around 310,000 households in the UK currently owe money to loan sharks.

Luckily there are safe places you can borrow money from, even if you have financial difficulties. These lenders stick to the law, make it clear from the start the total amount you will need to repay and collect your repayments in a lawful way. Your local Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) can advise you which lenders are most suitable for you. You can find your nearest Bureau by visiting www.citizensadvice.org.uk or by calling 08444 111 444.

The England Illegal Money Lending Team was set up because of the misery and fear that loan sharks cause. Cambridgeshire County Council are working with this team and local District Councils, to tackle loan sharks in the county, raise awareness of them and to support their victims.

If you know of any loan sharks operating in the area, the England Illegal Money Lending Team wants to hear from you. Call 0300 555 2222, text ‘loan shark + a message’ to 60003 or email reportaloanshark@stoploansharks.gov.uk Lines are open 24/7 and your details will be kept confidential.

If you already owe money to a loan shark the Illegal Money Lending team can offer advice and support. So don’t suffer in silence, contact the team using the details above.

Although the recent weather may be fooling us into thinking it’s still early spring, we are, in fact now gearing up to commence planting for this years “In Bloom”.
Our work continues throughout all seasons, but it is now when things really start happening. Within the next few weeks, you will, hopefully, start to notice the summer planting begin and with this year being a bumper celebration with the Queens Jubilee & the Olympic games we at CIB are pulling out all the stops in the hope of gaining our very own gold medal.

The team of volunteers seems to get smaller each year & we really would like to encourage more people to get involved. You may be able to offer a few hours a week to help the garden teams, or perhaps you’d like to help water- you get to drive around in a 1970′s electric milk float!!
Even if you don’t feel you can get fully involved- everyone in the Town can help do their bit: Lets keep litter & dog poo off the streets. Keep your own front garden neat & tidy- especially if you happen to have a property on the judging route. Would you like to sponsor a basket in memory of a loved one? Are you a budding photographer who could capture some of our work? There are lots of ways you can all do your bit.

This year we have several new projects which we hope will ‘WOW’ the judges & we will bring you more news of these are they start to be put in place.

Lets push together as a whole community & get that gold that is richly deserved.

There are several ways to get in touch:
Email: chatterisinbloom.live.co.uk
FaceBook: https://www.facebook.com/?ref=tn_tnmn#!/pages/Chatteris-Town-In-Bloom/173793365992612
OR you can put a note through the door of the Council Chamber in Church Lane, addressed to Chatteris In Bloom.
